Well that's not quite true, the game is based more on the DEATH and works of this 19th century writer.
The game main idea grew up out of the fact that we don't know the real cause of his death. In the game, you're a famous mystery writer and with the help of a supernatural pocket watch, you're transported to Poe's haunting tales in order to find his murderer.
You are to help Poe's soul find rest finally. For that you will have to go to a number of places to search for clues and talk with those who may have some information to help you find out the killer.
The hidden object game play is nothing unusual for the genre fans. The hints are represented by the black crows, but if you missclick too many times you will see a black cat scarying those crows off. Clicking on the items doesn't work very accurately sometimes.
Each scene is followed by a adventure puzzle where you are to solve some kind of problem using items that went to your inventory while the hidden object levels.
Mini-games peppered throughout the tale are mostly logic and deduction based, such as matching objects based on clues, rotating gears and dials, or figuring out the placement on an item on a grid by processions of elimination.
There's only one game mode which reduces the replayability level to minimum, but the game is still very rich in the elements a good HOG is supposed to have.
All of the parts of the game - the story, the characters, the graphics and the sounds - render the atmosphere of mysterious dark events.
